Room to enjoy the garden
Gardens around Northallerton tend to be generous. Whether it's a family home in Romanby, a period house near the High Street, a cottage in Osmotherley or a barn conversion out in the Vale, there's often space for a deck that really earns its place: a big dining deck off the kitchen, a sun deck at the far end of the lawn, or both.
We design every deck around the house and the way you'll use it. We'll look at which way the sun moves round, where the wind comes from across the open Vale, how the deck meets the doors and how it sits with the brick, stone or oak of the house.
Composite first
For most homes we recommend capped composite. It doesn't rot, splinter or need staining, holds its colour, and stays far less slippery than timber through a wet North Yorkshire winter. More about composite decking.
For barn conversions, cottages and traditional houses, hardwood can look wonderful, and we build in that too.
What we build
- Composite decking: smart and practically maintenance-free
- Timber and hardwood decking: natural warmth, perfect with stone and oak
- Raised and multi-level decking: for gardens that fall away
- Balustrades, steps and lighting: safety and evening ambience
- Decking repairs and replacement: replacing decks that have had their day
Built on solid ground
The Vale has plenty of heavy clay that holds water, so every deck gets a firm, well-drained base, solid footings and a ventilated frame at the joist spacing the boards need. We keep the deck below the damp-proof course and fix it properly to the house, or build it to stand alone.
Questions people ask
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not for a low deck. Decking is normally permitted development if no part is more than 30cm above the ground and, with any outbuildings, it covers no more than half the garden. Raised decks, listed buildings and homes in conservation areas such as central Northallerton and Osmotherley may need more. North Yorkshire Council can confirm.
