The big variables
How much deck. Area drives the quantity of boards, joists and footings. Wraparound shapes, angles and borders add cutting and fitting time.
Which boards. Treated softwood is the least expensive to buy. Capped composite and hardwood cost more up front, and composite then saves the yearly cost of cleaning and staining.
How high. A deck sitting just above the lawn needs a simple frame. One that carries the floor out level with a raised kitchen needs deeper footings, heavier timbers, bracing, steps and a balustrade.
The ground. Heavy Vale clay, soft wet patches and slopes all mean more preparation before any frame goes in.
Getting in. Big village gardens with a field gate are quick to work in; a town garden with no side access means carrying everything through.
The finishing touches. Glass or timber balustrades, lighting, built-in seats and planters, and taking away an old deck.
Getting quotes you can compare
